Paul Borges of Clifton, New Jersey, had this to say in March 2009: “This place is really not that good. There are boxes all scattered on the floor. It also smells really bad. It seems that they do not care about the smell. Unfortunately I bought some bread from there and it had mold on it. They do not check to see if there [sic] products are fresh or are expired. I would not recommend shopping there unless you are really in a bind.” This one-star review was flagged by Yelp as fake. It was written by the friend of Philamfood/Filstop owner Erwin Santos, who was the subject of a million-dollar lawsuit filed by Phil Am Trading, whose family owns the East West Market as well. That lawsuit was settled in mid-2016 with an agreement that overwhelmingly favors Phil-Am Trading and that compelled Philamfood Merchandising to give up the Philamfood name. PhilamFood is now “rebranding” itself as LS Filipino Food Merchandising Wholesale and Filstop Grocery.
