New Art Gallery Set to Open Featuring Contemporary Philippine and Filipino American Art and Artists

There will be a Grand Opening and Reception on June 24, 2017

To feature compelling art done by Filipino American artists in the greater LA region, Linda Nietes-Little has decided to open an art gallery adjacent to her Philippine Expressions Bookshop which is located on Suite 105 of the beautiful vintage building called “The Arcade.” Philippine-born and raised artist, and celebrated muralist Eliseo Art Silva will be the featured artist for this grand opening of the art gallery.

For the inaugural exhibition, titled: “DISRUPTIONS: The Art of Eliseo Art Silva”, 20 art works included embraces sparring ideas and intentionally disrupts the expected to bring attention to new ideas or to begin conversations. As an artist of over 100 public works under his name from the US east coast and west coast; and, in his own studio practice, the artist strives to bring the audience to situations to rethink and disrupt in order to energize. His signature work is the 150 ft.-long and 30 ft.- high Filipinotown Mural of LA (1994) which was recently recognized as one of the “20 Iconic Murals of Los Angeles” by LA Weekly. The new paintings, mixed media pieces and drawings featured in the show is an extension of his practice in public art which reconciles the history of his lineage with the history of painting. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, received a BFA at Otis College of Art and Design and an MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) under the auspices of the pioneering great abstract expressionist Grace Hartigan and resident MICA art critic Dominique Nahas.

This new space for contemporary Filipino art in Southern California was named after the PINTADOS (the painted people)- the name designated by early Spanish colonizers to the early inhabitants of the Philippines. The early Filipinos “painted” their bodies all over with elaborate tattoos and exquisite gold ornaments, thus the play of words also brings attention to the largely unknown and unchartered yet highly developed and advanced Philippine civilization; which was also known as: the 600 years of Indianized Kingdoms in the Philippines (900 AD-1565).

PINTA (paint) and DOS (second or two) also references the two walls allotted for art in the new gallery; and the fact that the new space also functions as a twin or annex of the Philippine Expressions Bookshop.
